Animal Reports -
Some of us were lucky enough to have a go at “green screening” our native bird or dog information reports!
We are an amazing class of Year 3 students at Paihia School in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. We have two teachers - Mrs Williams and Miss Hadwin. We love learning and sharing our work : )

Information report writing.
The Nga Motu Wombat writers have been learning how to write information reports. We started by choosing a New Zealand native bird. We made a list of questions and researched the answers using the Ipads. When we had all our information we wrote our reports using Google docs on the Ipads and Chromebooks.
Last week as part of our Living World Science Inquiry, we were lucky enough to have some representatives from Bay Bush Action come to visit Nga Motu. They taught us about the Kiwi and other Native birds and their predators. They also left us a Kiwi nesting box to decorate - it will go into the Opua Forest for Kiwi to lay their eggs in.

Every Friday we do math problem solving in class. We get into mixed groups and are given a maths problem to solve. It is really important that we work together, talk to each other and ask questions and of course listen to our group members' response. It is really tricky sometimes but it is a fun way to learn new strategies and teach each other. When we have finished we come together to talk about the math strategies we used, for example skip counting and the different materials and ways that we used this strategy. It is really interesting to see all the different ways people solve problems. Today we had a problem about a frog stuck in a well. Please ask us about how we solved this problem when we get home.

The Marble Challenge
We had ten straws, a paper clip and a marble. The challenge was to make a tower that would hold the marble. It was really tricky, but we all worked together!

Swimming to Survive
Over the last two weeks we have had Tracy come to our school to teach us about staying safe in the water and what to do when someone is in danger, for example caught in a rip or out of their depth in the water. We have practised using lifejackets and forming huddles to keep ourselves warm and chains to get us moving towards the shore as a group so we don't lose anyone.
We have learnt lots of important skills from Tracy already and we can't wait until she comes back next week to teach us more. Even though this was really important, serious information we still had heaps of fun !!

Learning About Nga Motu
We were lucky enough to have Olivia's Dad Billy come in to talk to us this week about Nga Motu (the islands). Billy works on the boats and takes 1000s of people out around the Bay every year, telling them the history and information about Nga Motu so we were very fortunate that he could come and share his knowledge with us. He told us lots of interesting facts and legends about the islands. Thanks Billy !
After Billy's talk we worked together to make our own ocean, complete with islands and all our self portraits floating around them. Come into Nga Motu and have a look at our fantastic mural next time you are at school.

Welcome to Team Nga Motu in 2017
We have been lucky enough to have new furniture bought for us by our wonderful Board of Trustees and we have had fun trying all the new learning areas out. We are very happy with our new learning environment. It is great to be able to work in different spaces, with different people or sometimes just by ourselves. 2017 is going to be a great year !!
